Textures

Step 2

Provide a letter summary explanation

1. The definition of  musical texture

Musical texture is in tune with music in terms of tempo, melody, and harmony.

2. The differences between types of musical textures

Monophonic a single line of melody

Homophonic-  a single line of melody accompanied by chords or other melodies that fill in the chord

Polyphonic  two independent melodies happening simultaneously

Heterophonic-  a single line of melody with variations of it happening simultaneously

3. Texture clues by sight

Monophonic can only see one line of melody

Homophonic  can only see one melodic line with chords underneath or can see two lines of the same rhythm with different pitches

Polyphonic  can see multiple different melodic lines

Heterophonic  can see multiple similar melodic lines

Song Forms

Step 4

Would you describe the form of America as being binary or ternary? Explain your answer.

"America" is binary because even though there is a repeat, both phrases are repeated, and the two phrases are different.

Would you describe the form of Swing Low Sweet Chariot as being binary or ternary? Explain your answer.

"Swing Low Sweet Chariot" is ternary because the "A" phrase, the chorus, is restated after the "B" phrase to make three phrases.

Step 5

Use the 3rd Movement Autumn from Vivaldi's Four Seasons to

provide the Letter Code (ABCDE, etc.) that symbolizes the form

ABACADAEAFAGA

Step 6

Use Little Fugue in G by J.S. Bach to provide the # of times the subject is heard in it's main form

9

_______________________________________________________

4. Texture clues by sound

Monophonic can only hear one line of melody

Homophonic  can clearly identify one line of melody and the remaining fills in a chord progression

Polyphonic  can hear two or more lines that could each be a leading line happening at the same time

Heterophonic-  can hear multiple melodies that sound similar
